It’s a model that’s making a lot of noise, literally and figuratively, these days. The Scirocco 3 R is popular with young drivers looking for a sporty alternative to the traditional Golf GTI/R. This German car has been all the rage since its presentation at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. With over a million units sold, it’s another success story for the German automaker.
Production of the Scirocco II ceased in 1992 and few expected to see this model reborn. Instead, 16 years later, the Scirocco returned with a third generation characterized by a bold design and also by a couple of quite extreme versions, the R and the GTS. The R, presented in 2009, had a 265hp 2-liter turbo engine, with a torque of 350 Nm, available with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a dual-clutch DSG6. The aggressive look was underlined by the 18″ wheels, spoiler on the roof, large front air intakes, double exhaust, racing seats and other details strongly inspired by the world of competition. The first version of the Scirocco III R remained in production until 2014, when the second R series was introduced, with an engine increased to 280hp.
